College of Home Science, Hyderabad.

Introduction:

Faculty of Home Science is one among the three faculties of Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University .The Agricultural universities that were established in the country on Land Grant pattern of United States were not only responsible for the development of agriculture, but also for improving the quality of life of rural families. With this responsibility, Home Science was also included as a component in agricultural universities. Family is recognized as an institution responsible for human resource development making optimum use of all available resources. Consequently the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in its model act, made a definite provision for Home Science in Agricultural universities in India. As a result the College of Home Science which was under the control of Technical Education Department was transferred to the Agricultural University in the year 1964.

Home Science education though initially developed and built around urban house wife is aimed to train a person to develop him/her as a better consumer. With the advent of Agricultural universities, the concept has changed and the main focus now is to make the curriculum more relevant to rural family with emphasis on intra family resources since rural family is considered not only as a consumption unit but also as a production unit. Home science education, therefore was considered as a discipline which could bridge the gap between the science and its application and which could meet the needs of the family through efficient management. Keeping this philosophy in view the home science faculty started functioning with an aim to enhance the standard of individuals in general and rural families in particular through teaching, research and extension activities. The main focus is on empowerment of woman and girl child in rural and urban households through self employment which would help them to become better resource managers and contribute towards rural development.

The faculty started functioning with one college at Saifabad, Hyderabad. Another college was started at Bapatla, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh in the year 1983. A Postgraduate and Research Centre was started in the University campus at Rajendranagar during the year 1985.

The academic programme in the Faculty is endowed with well competent staff in all departments who are well qualified with a doctoral degree in the irrespective area of specialization. Most of the Staff members have undergone advanced training both domestic and overseas. The faculty is highly reputed having due recognition at national and international level in the areas of teaching, research and extension. Both national and international organizations have supported several research projects by taking the expertise of the faculty. The faculty is also extending consultancy services to the developing institutions both inland and abroad.

Faculty of Home science gives personal attention to each student and records their progress. It has also been interacting with various industries, organizations and line departments continuously with a view to provide excellent career opportunities to students during and after completion of their degree requirements. The pedagogy is highly interactive between the faculty and the students. The faculty comprises five departments, i.e
