College of Home Science, Hyderabad.
Faculty of Home Science is one among the three faculties of
Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University .The Agricultural
universities that were established in the country on Land Grant
pattern of United States were not only responsible for the
development of agriculture, but also for improving the quality of
life of rural families. With this responsibility, Home Science was
also included as a component in agricultural universities. Family
is recognized as an institution responsible for human resource
development making optimum use of all available resources.
Consequently the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in its
model act, made a definite provision for Home Science in
Agricultural universities in India. As a result the College of Home
Science which was under the control of Technical Education
Department was transferred to the Agricultural University in the
Home Science education though initially developed and built
around urban house wife is aimed to train a person to develop
him/her as a better consumer. With the advent of Agricultural
universities, the concept has changed and the main focus now is to
make the curriculum more relevant to rural family with emphasis on
intra family resources since rural family is considered not only as
a consumption unit but also as a production unit. Home science
education, therefore was considered as a discipline which could
bridge the gap between the science and its application and which
could meet the needs of the family through efficient management.
Keeping this philosophy in view the home science faculty started
functioning with an aim to enhance the standard of individuals in
general and rural families in particular through teaching, research
and extension activities. The main focus is on empowerment of woman
and girl child in rural and urban households through self
employment which would help them to become better resource managers
and contribute towards rural development.

Hyderabad. Another college was started at Bapatla, Guntur district,
