Operationally, however, the work comprises the items enumerated below:

Selection of the Village :

The selected village should be nearer to the Research Station/College, easily accessible by road through out the year. There should be no factions and feuds. Receptivity, acceptability and cooperation of the farmers are prime requisites. It should not be a big or small village.

Operation:

Conduct Bench Mark Survey including socio-economic survey, soils, crops, pattern, current yield levels, extent of adoption of improved technology etc., identify constraints/problems and critical inputs for crops and animal production.

Soil and water testing for representative soils/waters to enable soil test based fertilizer recommendations, identify soil problems and nutritional disorders, if any, and correct the same.

  • Prepare Action Plan (on year to year basis) for the village, for 2 or 3 major crops identified, to improve the productivity.
  • Conduct demonstrations with proven technologies on the identified gaps and non-adopted improved practices.
  • Take up technology assessment and refinement to make it tailor made to suit the local soil, climate conditions and economic status of the farmers.
  • Produce seed of the improved crop varieties enough for the village.
  • Implement IPM & INM technologies for major crops.
  • Introduce income generation enterprises, other than agricultural activities, also suitable for local conditions.
  • Emphasis on participation of farm women income and employment generation activities.
  • Assist in the procurement of quality inputs like seeds, pesticides and fertilizers in time.
  • Workout credit requirement of quality inputs like seeds, pesticides and fertilizers in time.
  • Workout credit requirements of the farmers and help to get it though Banks.

Thus, more than 50 villages have been adopted by the all University centers Viz, during 1998, for their overall development. In these villages, all activities of the University, be it research, teaching or extension including RAWE, RHWE, and NSS and other extra-curricular activities are implemented. Regular visits of the scientists/teachers to these villages to render on the spot advises and help to solve the farmers problems are mandatory. This is yet another novel programme implemented by the University.
