Prof (Dr.) V. Damodara Naidu takes over as 12th Vice Chancellor of Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University on 5th June 2017. A Plant Pathologist by vocation, Dr. Naidu is a nationally reputed personality with his salient research findings on rice resistance breeding programmes. He had his graduation and post-graduation from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati with specialization in Plant Virology. He holds a Doctoral degree in Plant Pathology from Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack & Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. He was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow trained at Directorate of Rice Research, Hyderabad, India (1979-1981). Beginning his career as an Assistant Plant Pathologist in 1981, Dr. Naidu’s path spans through on rice diseases as Plant Pathologist (since 1990) and Principal Scientist (since 1998). He was involved in resistance breeding programmes and development of 21 blast resistant rice varieties and two rice hybrids which are popular in many Indian States. His progress on the research front also saw him held administrative positions like Head, Agricultural Research Station, Nellore (over 12 years), University Head of Plant Pathology Department for over 2 years.
As a researcher, Dr. Naidu had published over 50 research papers in journals of national and international repute. His contributions to rice pathology in terms of research, training to farmers were recognized at regional, national and international level. Dr. Naidu also had worthwhile opportunities to present his research results at “International Rice Research Conference” at Beijing, China (2002) and “World Rice Research Conference” at Tsukuba, Japan (2004). His quest for excellence, strenuous efforts in research and relentless help to farming community earned him with “Sri Veerapaneni Narasimham Memorial Gold Medal-2002”. He had the privilege of serving the Board Member of ANGRAU from May 2016 to May 2017.
