Brief Profile of Dr. Namala Srinivasa Rao

Expertise in one line: Vertebrate and Structural Pest Management

Notable contributions :

More than 20 years of research, extension and teaching experience in vertebrate and structural pest management, with major emphasis on rodent management in rice-based agro-ecosystems and macaque management in forest-fringe areas. Served as Principal Investigator in the All India Network Project on Vertebrate Pest Management for more than 12 years and contributed to national programmes on sustainable pest management.

Developed and field-validated innovative approaches including nursery-centred polythene barrier systems and modified Trap Barrier System (TBS) applications for rodent management, liquid baiting techniques for rodent control in storage, and low-cost solar fencing and acoustic deterrent approaches for macaque management.

Research has focused on behavioural ecology, crop-loss assessment, rodent population dynamics, resistance management and vertebrate pest–crop interactions.

Recent work includes crop-phenology-based understanding of lesser bandicoot rat behaviour in irrigated rice, large-scale evaluation of nursery/main-field TBS approaches, and development of practical, farmer-oriented vertebrate pest management technologies.

Conducted and coordinated 200+ capacity-building programmes for scientists, extension personnel, students and farmers, including national-level training programmes through NIPHM and NIRD&PR.

Served as a core member in the development of eight Qualification Packs (QPs) for Structural Pest Management under the NIRD&PR programme.

At the National Institute of Plant Health Management (NIPHM), contributed to and coordinated 15 national-level, 15-day training programmes on rodent pest management.

Served for more than 12 years in Principal Investigator/leadership roles under the All India Network Project on Vertebrate Pest Management.
