Dr. T.S.S.K. Patro joined as Scientist, RARS, Anakapalle, ANGRAU, in the year 2002, where he carried out research on sugarcane for four years. He identified several new disease reports in sugar cane for the first time in India as well as world, like “Toprotphase” of red stripe disease caused by Acinetobacter baumannii, Banded Sclerotial Disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani and “Red spot of leaf sheath” caused by Mycorellosiella viginae. Also identified and reported Aschersonia placenta, an entomogenous fungus in management of Spike disease of Sugarcane, first in the world. Developed talc based formulation of Trichoderma viride, for the management of Sugarcane red rot caused by Colletotrichum falcatum, which can be used as a protective bio agent in red rot prone areas. From 2005 onwards he worked at ARS, Vizianagaram, on millet crops for a span of 17 years and identified more than 12 new disease reports like Ragi mosaic, as a ds-DNA badna virus for the first time in the world and Tarspot of Finger millet first in Asia. Developed technologies like recommendations for the eco friendly management of blast disease in finger millet and banded blight disease in six millets. He has developed and released 10 Finger millet varieties at National & State level including first biofortified variety Indravathi and blast resistant varieties VR-847, VR-(W)-936, VR 929, VR-988, VR-1107 and one Little millet variety LMV 539. He established a millet processing unit for the first time in the State of A.P. at Vizianagaram. Also established a value added manufacturing unit, through which generated tremendous profit to the Institution. At ARS, Vizianagaram, during his period, produced more than 180 tonnes of breeder seed of finger millet and supplied to the Integrated Tribal Development Authority (ITDA), Department of Agriculture, NGO's of various states, Seed Corporation etc. and more than 4500 farmers and more than 100 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) were trained on small millet cultivation practices, quality seed production, processing and value addition and IPM in agriculture and horticulture crops. Under his leadership ARS, Vizianagaram consecutively received best research station award of university, from 2013 to 2022 and ICAR’s award for best AICRP centre in small millets, from 2016 to 2022. During his tenure as head of the station, ARS also got best institution award from the Government of India in the year 2022. He has published more than 200 research papers in reputed national and international journals. Dr. Patro has also authored 4 popular books on IPM in Horticultural Crops and Millets. He is fellow of more than 9 scientific societies and editorial board member of various scientific journals. He has chaired various technical sessions held at more than 15 countries.
