Dr. Adala Vishnuvardhan Reddy with a vast academic and administrative experience has assumed charge as Vice Chancellor, ANGRAU on 14 August 2020. He had his Masters’ Degree in Agriculture (Genetics & Plant Breeding) from Agricultural College, Bapatla, APAU and Doctoral Degree from College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Prior to assuming charge as Vice Chancellor, he worked in various capacities in ANGRAU viz., Director (Seeds), Director (APRRI); Special Officer (Seeds), Associate Director of Research (HQrs) and in ICAR (19 years) in many capacities including  Director of “Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research” (IIOR) at Hyderabad, since August 2016. Dr. Vishnuvardhan Reddy is a Plant Breeder with over 28 years of inestimable research experience in rice, oilseeds, pulses, millets, and seed technology etc besides research coordination and policy making at National Level.

He is instrumental in developing 26 crop varieties/hybrids of sunflower, castor, sesame, safflower, rice, pearl millet, blackgram, redgram and Jatropha that gained wide popularity. Noteworthy are PCH 111 & PCH 222 (castor); APSH-66 (sunflower); YLM-66 (sesame); TSF-1 (safflower); RNR-15048 (rice); PHB-3 (bajra); RGT-1 (redgram); Balaji (jatropha). He had developed 216 diverse inbreds, 45 CMS lines, 63 ‘R’ lines of sunflower. He had identified seven GM resistant genes and 20 resistant donors in rice. He had also coordinated the evaluation trials of cotton, maize, rice, sunflower of seed industry in Andhra Pradesh. About 9 parental lines had been registered with NBPGR on his name as “Patents & IPR”.

His remarkable stint in plant breeding research is evident by 18 competitive grants that he secured worth more than 76 Crore INR. He had presented his research at various national and international platforms with 164 publications in referred journals, 24 book chapters, 61 technical bulletins, 89 conference proceedings besides authoring several popular articles. He is associated with three patents and one in pipeline at his credit. He acted as Nodal Officer for “Biofuel Research” in Andhra Pradesh (2007-’12), Mega Seed Project (2005-’07), ICAR Seed Project, IPR Activities-ANGRAU. He has mentored 39 Doctoral and Masters Students of ANGRAU and other Universities. His major research recognitions are a) Fellow of “Indian Society of Oilseeds Research” (ISOR); b) Editor,  “Journal of Oilseeds Research” (2004-’07); c)  Vice President (AP Chapter), Indian Society of Genetics & Plant Breeding (since 2012); d) Vice President, ISOR (since 2017); e) General Secretary, ISOR (2004-’05); f) Organizing Secretary, National Oilseeds Symposium-2020 by ISOR, g) Team Leader of Sub-Group on Doubling Farmers’ Income in Oilseeds, Ministry of Agrl. Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, GoI (continuing); h) Member, Task Force Committee for increasing oilseeds production in India, Ministry of Agrl. Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, GoI (continuing); i) Member, National Organizing Committee for National Conference on Innovations in Chemical Engineering, BITS, Pilani;  j) Member, Scientific Panel on Oils & Fats, FSSAI, New Delhi (since 2020); and k)  Member of Review Committee for “On spot verification for Plant Genome Savior Community Award-2012 etc.

Dr. Vishnuvardhan Reddy’ is recipient of a) “Neelakantapuram Kaverappa Gold Medal for Best Agricultural Research” by ANGRAU (2014); b) “Distinguished Scientist Award” (2015); c) “World Telugu Conference Award” by Govt. of AP (2012); d) “Seedsmen Association Annual Award” (2012); e) Andhra Pradesh Scientist Award (2008); f) Jawaharlal Nehru Award (1993) in crop improvement from ICAR. Other awards that witness his contributions include a) Best AICRP (Castor) Centre Award of ICAR (2009-’10) as Team Lead; b) Best AICRP-NSP (Crops) Centre Award by ICAR (2014) as Team Lead; c) association with Chaudhary Devi Lal Outstanding AICRP (Castor) Award of ICAR (2005); d) Rajshree Tandan Official Language Award by GoI (2017) as Team Lead etc.

Improving infrastructural facilities, linkages with reputed national and international institutions, HR Development in frontier research areas like “Nanotechnology, Bioinformatics,  and Artificial Intelligence” to overcome challenges in agriculture, enhancing farmers’ income through farming systems approach, marketing/licensing of ANGRAU developed technologies/products, intensive research in agriculture and agricultural engineering and overall improvement of University ranking at National Level are his future vision and mission .

Academic Council

        The Academic Council is the principal body vested with the responsibility of implementing and monitoring all the academic programmes. The Council is headed by the Vice-Chancellor as the Chairperson and consists of Deans, Director of Research, Director of Extension, University Heads of Departments and Professors as Members. In addition, the Council consists of ten academicians representing different faculties nominated by the Vice-Chancellor and one representative of the Board of Management. The Council normally meets once in six months.

        The multi-faculty nature of the University, with three functional faculties, namely Agriculture, Home Science and Postgraduate Studies, is guided by independent Faculty Boards, which are convened to meet as and when academic programmes of the concerned faculties need discussion and decision. The Faculty Boards are headed by the respective Deans. All issues concerned with academic matters such as formulation of course curricula, syllabi, examinations, student evaluation procedures and such other matters are first tabled for discussion in the respective Faculty Boards, before referring to the Academic Council. 

         In the realm of research and extension, which are the major and key components of activities of the University, in addition to academic programmes (Teaching), the Research and Extension Advisory Committee (REAC) headed by the Vice-Chancellor functions as the principal decision making body. The REAC is guided by the Zonal Research and Extension Advisory Councils (ZREAC) constituted for each of the seven Agro-climatic Zones. The REAC as well as ZREACs have representatives from the Line departments of the Government of Andhra Pradesh such as Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Women and Child Welfare, farmers, industries, besides academicians.


Faculty Boards

The Faculty Boards, headed by the respective Deans, will consider all issues concerned with the academic matters such as formulation of course curricula, syllabi, examinations, student evaluation procedures etc., which are finally referred to the Academic Council for approval. Eminent academicians from other institutions are also nominated as members by Deans of the Faculty concerned.


Research and Extension Advisory Council (REAC)

The Research and Extension Advisory Council (REAC), under the Chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor functions as the principal decision making body for the research and extension activities of the University. It is guided by Zonal Research and Extension Advisory Councils (ZREACs) constituted for each of the seven Agro-climatic Zones of the State, with the Associate Director of Research as the Chair person. All the ZREACs and the REAC have representatives from the line Departments of the Government of Andhra Pradesh which include Agriculture, Horticulture, Women and Child Welfare, Farmers and industries, besides academicians nominated by the University.
