Geospatial Tech. Center

Geospatial technology encompasses a broad range of modern tools including remote sensing, geographical information system, global positioning system and internet mapping applications contributing to the collection, analysis, interpretation and mapping of spatial data. Geospatial tools enable quantification of spatial and temporal variability of climate and soil conditions across regions. The technology plays an influential role in the agriculture sector by resource management, prediction of yield and improving farm practices through supporting the needs of research, teaching and extension. The Geospatial Technology Centre (GTC) was inaugurated by Sri. B. Rajasekhar, I.A.S., Special Chief Secretary, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh on June 1st, 2017 at ANGRAU, Lam, Guntur to serve multiple purposes benefitting not only the students & faculty of ANGRAU but wide range of line departments in geospatial data management.

1.        Natural resources inventory and management.
2.        Crop mapping, monitoring and management.
3.        Assessment of crop damage due to natural calamities.
4.        Capacity building to the stakeholders.
 Specific function:
1.      Soil mapping, land degradation assessment and monitoring, land use and land cover mapping and monitoring.
2.      Climate and environmental monitoring.
3.      Start of season, crop acreage estimation, crop health monitoring. 
4.      Crop simulation modeling for spatial crop yield mapping
5.      Assessment of crop damage due to natural calamities i.e., floods, drought, cyclones etc.
6.      Technology support to crop insurance.
7.      To support the student research projects of ANGRAU.
8.      To impart training and creation of awareness on technologies to the stake holders associated with agricultural research and extension.

Significant Achievements

  • Sustained efforts of the University resulted in the development and release of 449 improved and high yielding varieties and hybrids of different crops which include 139 in cereals, 56 in millets, 69 in pulses, 51 in oilseeds, 77 in commercial crops, 1 in biofuel crops, 2 in fodder crops and 54 in fruits, vegetables & Spices.

    First in the country to release the following:

    • Rice Hybrids APHR1 and APHR2.
    • Gallmidge (Kakariya) & BPH (Vajram) rice resistant varieties.
    • Triple Cross Hybrid in maize (Trishulata) and public bred popcorn hybrid (BPCH-6).
    • Powdery mildew blackgram resistant variety - LBG 17 (Krishnayya).
    • Nematode resistant variety groundnut - Tirupati-3.
    • Rust resistant safflower variety -Manjira.
    • Red rot resistant sugarcane variety - Co A7601.
    • White fly resistant cotton variety Kanchana / LK 861.
    • Authentic Sunflower Hybrid - APHS -11.
    • Godavari Ganga in Coconut.
    • Foxtail millet variety Suryanandi which is early maturing and drought tolerant has replaced around 50% foxtail millet area. It is one of the highly popular varieties in Karnataka state. Farmers and traders prefer it due to golden yellow grain colour.
    • The foxtail millet varieties SiA 3085 and SiA 3156 released by the University are distributed under NFSM to NE states by IIMR, Hyderabad. These varieties have enhanced the productivity levels almost 40-50% in farmers’ fields
    • White Sorghum variety NTJ 5 released during 2018, occupies around 60% of sorghum area in Kurnool district because of its special characters like non lodging, machine harvestable, high yielding, good roti making quality.
    • Yellow sorghum variety N 15 released in 2018 is high yielding and is the only yellow variety in India in the seed chain that is preferred by farmers.
    • Machine harvestable chickpea variety NBeG-47 developed from ANGRAU made it possible cutting and threshing in a short time.

    Nutrient Management

    • Identified high P soils in the state and advocated less usage (by 30%) of Phosphorous through field demonstrations. 
    • Developed a portable “Soil Test Kit” to enable the farmers to test soil samples easily & quickly by themselves to popularize the concept of soil test based fertilizer usage.
    • District-wise soil maps were prepared by “Saline Water Scheme” of ANGRAU for delineation of saline water.
    • Research station-wise soil fertility maps were prepared by “Geo Spatial Technology Centre” of ANGRAU for depicting soil nutrient status of different blocks.

    Integrated Farming Systems Research

    • Gross income in all farming systems increased when compared to cropping system alone. Gross income was increased in rice – poultry farming system from Rs. 67856/house hold to Rs.85387/house hold with B: C ratio 2.06 and Gross income was increased in rice – dairy farming system from Rs. 78240/house hold to Rs.105235/house hold with B: C ratio 2.18. Gross income was increased in rice – dairy -poultry farming system from Rs. 82376/house hold to Rs. 108967 /house hold with B: C ratio 2.19.
    • rop + small ruminants based farming system in rainfed situation (horsegram + rearing of 2 ram lambs with grazing + concentrate feeding @ 125 g/day for 4 months) had recorded higher net returns of Rs. 6,248/ha compared to horsegram alone (Rs. 5,725/ha).
    • Crop + large ruminants based farming system in partially irrigated situation i.e., groundnut + fodder maize + feeding of buffalo /day @ GN haulm 5 kg + fodder maize 10 kg + UMMB 1 kg block/10 days has recorded higher net returns of Rs. 96,667/ha with respect to marginal farmers’, groundnut + fodder maize + feeding of desi cow/day @ GN haulm 5 kg + fodder maize 10 kg + mineral block 1 kg block/10 days has recorded higher net returns of Rs. 89,767/ha compared to crop alone for small farmers’ and in case of medium farmers’ groundnut + fodder maize + feeding of crossbred cow/day @ GN haulm 5 kg + super napier 30 kg + rice bran 1 kg + mineral mixture 80 g has recorded higher net returns of Rs.1,14,564/ha.
    • Crop + small ruminants based farming system in partially irrigated situation i.e., groundnut var. Kadiri Harithandhra + rearing of 2 ram lambs with grazing + groundnut haulm 300 g + grain feeding 100 g/day + mineral block 1 kg has recorded higher net returns of Rs. 1,05,202 and 1,21,103/ha respectively with respect to marginal and small farmers’ and in case of medium farmers’ groundnut var. Kadiri Harithandhra with KN03 spray+ rearing of 5 ram lambs with grazing + groundnut haulm 300 g + grain feeding 100 g/day + mineral block 1 kg resulted higher net returns of Rs.1,42,155/ha compared to crop alone.

    • Development of IPM strategies for management of pests in cotton, rice, coconut, castor, redgram and sugarcane.

    •    Mole Drainage, a subsurface method of draining in clay soils that experience regular water logging from high      rainfall will improve soil conditions and drainage.

    •    The temporarily waterlogged soils can be reclaimed with low cost mole drainage systems and addition of soil oxygenation agents (placement of Calcium peroxide granular powder @ 2 g/plant at 15 cm deep and 15 cm away from the plant)  during monsoon season will ensure good aeration.
    •    The combined effect of mole drainage and soil oxygenation resulted in 25-38% increase in the sugarcane yields of Co 86032 variety.

  • Community Science Research

    The Faculty of Home Science has restructured its curriculum to orient the courses of UG programme to develop much required skills and self employment to enhance community development. Theprogramme is designed to encompass a unique field of knowledge with comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach from various domains. The four year undergraduate degree programme B.Sc. (Hons) Home Science with two years of core courses in Home Science subjects and two years of department specific courseswas revamped with new curriculum to offer B.Sc. (Hons) Community Science withthree years of core courses and one year of student READY programme from the academic year 2016-17.The Community Science is a holistic course which aims at all-round development of students who choose to pursue professional career in the field of community development.

    The College of Home Science that was established in the year 2013 with an intake of 25 students has enhanced its student strength to 83 from the academic year 2016-17. From the academic year 2018-19, the admission forUG programme in Community Science will be open for both boys and girls.

    • The Community Science faculty empowers farm families through its research on developing innovative, user friendly, low cost technologies in Foods & Nutrition, Family Resource Management, Child Development, Textiles & Clothing and Extension Education. 
    • Technologies developed by Community Science faculty such as agro-huller for millets and legumes to reduce drudgery, processed sorghum foods as a rural enterprise, value addition of food products catering to nutritional needs of rural and urban populations, have been well received. 
    • Keeping in tune with the growing demand for eco friendly textiles, the ANGRAU has developed vegetable dyes, yarns with banana, mesta and sisal fibres and value addition by decorative printing. 
    • CAD manual for apparel designing is of high value for fashion technology entrepreneurs.
    • Several low cost technologies like ice cream freezer, a fish vending table were developed.
    • Consultancy to FAO has also been provided in the areas of natural fibres and dyes in Uttarkhand and Butan.
    • Quality auditing in textile industry under ISO 9001- 2000 and ISO 14000 has also been undertaken by the faculty.
    • Software for developmental assessment of young children was developed to assess the physical and psychomotor development of children from birth to 6 years. It is user friendly software for field level functionaries for early identification of developmental delays and to plan suitable intervention programmes to avoid further developmental delays among young children.
    • Popularization of millets has been carried out duly participating in millet fests, food biz, food processing industry conclave and kisan melas. The millet products were also popularized by giving demonstrations and guest lectures.
    • Content in multiple forms for the themes like Health & Hygiene, Foods & Nutrition, Child Development, Resource Management, Extension Education, Textile & Clothing, different developmental programmes and enterprise promotion was developed under the project, Samajika Samachar web portal
